Our Roots

Micron's roots.  Back in the 1980s, the birth of the microcomputer was coming of age.  As a young newbie in database development and my new skills with DBase II working on new operating systems like CPM,  life was exciting.  I dabbled with new micos like the Altair, The Sinclair Z81, the Kaypro and Apple II and IIe. New technologies were emerging.  A customer had just purchased a Digital PDP11 with 8 inch Floppy disks then called a micro that was the size of a small fridge .  They knew of my family's background in manufacturing and they asked me to make them a box for this new 8-inch floppy disk.  Made a few boxes and all of a sudden calls were pouring in from all over the world  and within months the 5 1/4" was being released.

I quickly realized the market potential and rushed to the patent office and got the first patent on magnetic media storage.  All of a sudden I was in the plastic business.  knew next to nothing of plastics but blind ambition led the way. Within months I was selling more boxes than we could make,  We needed to injection mold our boxes wow. Had no idea what injection molding was. Made a few calls and landed with Mr. Fred in Montreal Canada and cordially invited us to visit his plant. As we drove in my brother and I came face to face with these four gigantic silos and we both said, "Ho Shit"

We walked into the plant and faced these rows of gigantic 25-foot machines.  The old HPM plungers making Melmac dishes.  We went back to our shop and our blind ambition finally led us to our own plant with the first CNC injection molding machines on our floor within that year.

More coming.
